The building, constructed in 1910 by the author’s great-grandfather, served as the headquarters of the H. Wolff fur company, one of Germany’s largest and most successful fur businesses in the early 20th century. The family’s prosperity allowed them to live on a grand estate in Wannsee, an elite suburb of Berlin.

But in 1937, the Nazis had other plans. The Victoria Insurance Company foreclosed on the building’s mortgage and transferred ownership to the Reichsbahn, Hitler’s state-owned railways—later responsible for transporting millions of Jews to death camps. Victoria, then led by a German lawyer with close ties to the Nazi Party, was also part of a consortium insuring buildings at Auschwitz. Following the Third Reich’s defeat, the building ended up in the Soviet sector of Berlin, and with the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, it lay just beyond legal reach.

Dina Gold grew up hearing her grandmother’s stories of life in the Wolff building but had no documentation to prove ownership. When the Wall fell in 1989, she set out to uncover the truth and fight for restitution.
