Rental Policy

Here's how FrugalText rentals work - what your rental includes, how returns happen, what late fees look like, and what to do if something goes wrong. Plain English, no surprises.

Overview

How FrugalText rentals work

Renting eliminates the expense of buying a book you'll only use for one semester and likely never open again.

Every rental comes with a prepaid return label, a grace period before late fees apply, and direct email support from a real person if any issues arise. This policy outlines each of these details with the clarity and thoroughness law students expect.

Rental Period

Your rental window

FrugalText rentals run for the full academic semester. At checkout, your rental is tied to the current semester's return deadline, which we set in advance (Fall 2026 rentals are due December 28, 2026). Your exact due date is shown in your order confirmation email, in the order summary at checkout, and in your account dashboard at every login.

The rental clock is tied to the semester deadline, not the day your book arrives. You can place a rental order at any point during the semester and your due date remains the same published return date for that term.

Late Fees

When late fees begin

We know exam weeks get chaotic. Every rental includes a 7-day grace period after the semester return deadline before any late fee is charged. If your return ships within those 7 days, no fee is charged. The carrier's scan date is what matters, not the arrival date.

After the grace period, a weekly late fee of roughly 10 percent of the book's Brand New purchase price is charged, for each copy that is overdue, to the payment method you saved at checkout. Fees continue weekly until the rent you have already paid plus the late fees charged reach the book's replacement cost, counted per copy, at which point they stop. You never pay more than the book's replacement cost in total. We email a reminder 48 hours before the first charge, and fees stop accruing the day the carrier scans your return.

Common Questions

Rental questions, answered.

  1. When is my rental due back?

Rentals are due by the published return deadline for the current semester. Your exact date is shown at checkout, in your confirmation email, and in your account dashboard.

  2. What happens if I return it late?

You get a 7-day grace period after the deadline. After that, a weekly late fee is charged to your stored payment method for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's Brand New price, so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. Fees also stop the day the carrier scans your return.

  3. Can I highlight or write in a rental?

Yes. Normal highlighting and margin notes are fine. The book needs to come back in Good condition or better, unless it shipped as Acceptable.

  4. How do returns work?

Every rental includes a prepaid return label. Print it, box the book, and drop it at the carrier. The scan date counts as your return date, even if delivery takes longer.

  5. What if I lose or badly damage the book?

Email us first. A lost book, water damage, missing pages, or a broken binding is charged as an unreturned book. A damage fee never exceeds one book's Brand New price, and for late fees the rent you already paid counts toward that same ceiling.

  6. Can I just keep the book?

You can. If a rental is never returned, the rent you already paid plus the late fees charged stop at the book's Brand New price, counted per copy, and the book is yours.
