Description
Cases and Materials on Employment Discrimination 11th Edition Charles A. Sullivan ISBN 9798892079143
The eleventh edition of the best-selling Cases and Materials on Employment Discrimination maintains its familiar structure while introducing important updates and modernization. As in prior editions, it integrates cases, notes, and problems into a cohesive pedagogy that balances theoretical insight with practical application.
The authors organize the material by theories of discrimination rather than by protected trait, reflecting the unified analytical approach used under Title VII, the ADEA, and the ADA. This framework helps students understand how discrimination is conceptualized and proven in litigation, while giving instructors flexibility to explore particular statutory or doctrinal interests in greater depth.
The text also equips students to compare a litigation-centered approach with the compliance, investigative, and counseling roles central to contemporary employment law practice. The eleventh edition features three new principal cases and updated notes and materials throughout. A statutory supplement remains available as a separate purchase.
New to the Eleventh Edition:
-
Ames v. Ohio (2025), eliminating the “background circumstances” test for reverse-discrimination claims.
-
Muldrow v. St. Louis (2024), defining the level of harm required to constitute a “term or condition of employment.”
-
Groff v. DeJoy (2023), revisiting the “de minimis” standard for religious accommodations.
-
Expanded and updated notes incorporating discussion of new cases, including U.S. v. Skrmetti (2025), Mahmoud v. Taylor (2025), Stanley v. City of Sanford (2025), Bissonnette v. LePage Bakeries Park St., LLC (2024), Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo (2024), and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (2023).
-
A modernized section on pregnancy discrimination, including a streamlined version of Young v. UPS (2015) and expanded coverage of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (effective 2023).
-
Updated context on accommodation law, highlighting how pregnancy and religious accommodation requirements are converging with disability accommodation standards.
-
New material on executive actions taken during the second Trump administration and their effects on antidiscrimination enforcement.
Benefits for Professors and Students:

-
A comprehensive and highly regarded Teacher’s Manual.

Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free with no deduction if it reaches us by your semester return date, or after it's already overdue. Print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page. Returning it EARLY, before your semester return date, deducts a 15% restocking fee and the label cost from your refund, the same as cancelling a shipped rental for a refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
