Description
The Military Divorce Handbook: A Practical Guide to Representing Military Personnel and Their Families 3rd Edition Mark Eugene Sullivan ISBN 9781641053303
Completely revised and significantly expanded, The Military Divorce Handbook remains the definitive resource for understanding and navigating the unique challenges of representing military personnel and their spouses in family law matters—divorce, separation, custody, support, and property division. This essential guide combines comprehensive coverage with practical, accessible advice, making it an indispensable addition to any family lawyer’s library.
Divorce and family law cases involving military clients present distinctive issues that can complicate representation. The Military Divorce Handbook walks attorneys through these complexities, providing the guidance necessary to ensure competent and thorough advocacy. Key chapters address the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), military-specific tax considerations, and the division of military retirement benefits. The book also covers critical areas such as custody disputes, domestic violence, and the nuances of representing both servicemembers and their spouses.
Mark E. Sullivan explains complex topics in clear, concise, and current language, supplemented throughout with practical Practice Tips to make legal practice more efficient. Appendices provide relevant forms and resources, and this two-volume edition includes hundreds of additional pages of online content.
This fully updated third edition includes:
-
Expanded guidance on obtaining government documents under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act
-
A new SCRA case glossary, a chart of statutory sections since the Act’s 2015 codification, and instructions for verifying military service via the Department of Defense database
-
Section-by-section analysis of the Uniform Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act, plus expanded coverage of international child abduction remedies and the Hague Abduction Convention
-
Resources for domestic abuse, including the Family Advocacy Program, Article 128b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice criminalizing domestic violence, and guidance on representing sexual assault and domestic-abuse victims
-
Updated coverage of the Blended Retirement System, the Supreme Court’s Howell decision, VA indemnification, and the “Frozen Benefit Rule” under the Uniformed Services Former Spouses’ Protection Act
-
Detailed analysis of military retired pay, reductions in grade at retirement for misconduct, and related procedural considerations
Now in its third edition, The Military Divorce Handbook continues to provide family law practitioners with the specialized knowledge and practical tools needed to represent military clients effectively. Its hands-on guidance equips attorneys to handle complex military-related cases with confidence, whether representing a servicemember or a spouse.

Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free with no deduction if it reaches us by your semester return date, or after it's already overdue. Print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page. Returning it EARLY, before your semester return date, deducts a 15% restocking fee and the label cost from your refund, the same as cancelling a shipped rental for a refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
