Description
Evidence A Structured Approach 6th Edition David Leonard 9798889062639
The Sixth Edition of Evidence: A Structured Approach continues to provide an effective and engaging learning experience for students. Each section begins with a Federal Rule of Evidence, followed by detailed explanations of its background, rationale, and application. The text includes numerous diagrams as visual aids and short transcripts illustrating how the rules are applied in the courtroom.
Focusing primarily on the rules rather than cases, the book includes a few edited seminal cases that are essential for every lawyer. The core of the “structured approach” is the Questions for Classroom Discussion, which accompany the narrative explanations for each rule. These questions present simple hypothetical cases, enabling step-by-step analysis of each section of the relevant rule.
Students quickly learn that preparation pays off, as they know in advance the questions the professor will ask in class. The book’s website allows students to download the questions directly into their notes before class, enabling them to spend more time thinking and less time typing.
New to the Sixth Edition:
- Revised Questions for Classroom Discussion, examples, and Exam Tips
- California Evidence Code §352.2
- Updated organization of Chapters 5 (Character and Other Act Evidence), 7 (Examining Witnesses), and 10 (Burdens of Proof and Presumptions)
- Modernized design
- Updates to Rule 801(d)(1) (subject to cross-examination; prior inconsistent statements)
- Updates to Rule 901(b) (problems posed by new technologies)
- Updates to Rule 702 (testimony by expert witnesses)
- Developments regarding evidence from social media or stored in electronic format
- Recent rule amendments and proposals to limit the admissibility of evidence regarding the content of rap lyrics
Benefits for Instructors and Students:
- Structured Approach: The book provides a series of short hypotheticals for class discussion for each rule. Each hypo builds on the previous ones, clarifying the key parts of the rule and how they work together. Knowing the focus of class discussions in advance incentivizes students to come prepared. This method aligns with how most professors teach evidence law, by presenting a series of building hypotheticals.
- Hearsay Chapter: This challenging topic is taught through hundreds of examples, supported by visual depictions of key concepts. Diagrams show students how to differentiate hearsay from non-hearsay by illustrating the logical steps connecting a statement to the fact it is offered to prove (Statement --> Inference --> Conclusion).
- Streamlined Length: The manageable length allows professors to cover and students to focus on the essential material.
- Impact of Technology and Recent Amendments: Explored through cases and problems, addressing the effects of new technology and recent rule amendments.
This edition continues to be an invaluable resource for teaching and learning evidence law, combining theoretical explanations with practical classroom tools.

-
Free rental returns, whenever you are done
Print a prepaid return label from your account whenever you have finished with the book, and drop it at the carrier listed on the label. Returning early costs you nothing: it is the same free label, and sending it back sooner is welcome. Just be sure it reaches us by the semester deadline to avoid late fees.
-
Purchase returns: 15% restocking fee
Purchases can be returned within 30 days in the condition you received. We will email a prepaid return label; once we receive your book, we refund the purchase price minus the 15% restocking fee and the return label cost. Original shipping is non-refundable.

Shipping costs calculated at checkout
Real-time rates are quoted at checkout based on your address and the books in your cart. Returning your book is always free.
Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free: print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page, whether you send it back early or on the semester deadline. Cancelling a shipped rental for a refund is different: there, the return label cost comes out of your refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
