Description
Criminal Law: Case Studies and Controversies 6th Edition Robinson ISBN:9798892070065
Criminal Law: Case Studies & Controversies breaks away from the traditional, opinion-centered approach, opting instead for a vibrant, case study method that brings criminal law to life through real-world application and statutory interpretation.
Rather than focusing solely on judicial opinions, this innovative approach allows first-year law students to dive into complex, real-life situations, encouraging deep understanding of criminal law doctrines while building practical skills essential for future prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other legal professionals.
Each case study presents provocative scenarios that fuel engaging class discussions and allow students to directly apply legal principles to situations they may encounter in practice. Whenever relevant, the text includes actual cases from diverse jurisdictions to give students hands-on experience with how doctrines are applied across different legal contexts.
New to the Sixth Edition:
- Expanded and Updated Case Studies: The latest edition includes new and updated case studies and discussion materials, based on extensive classroom experience, that emphasize pressing issues in modern criminal law.
- Streamlined Content: Every chapter has been refined to ensure a concise, efficient, and accessible reading experience.
- Enhanced Teacher’s Manual: The updated Teacher’s Manual offers valuable resources, including additional cases, teaching notes, and discussion prompts for classroom engagement.
Key Benefits for Professors and Students:
- Case Studies Approach: Each section opens with a comprehensive case study, providing in-depth background on the people, events, and legal issues involved in the offense, offering students a grounded understanding of criminal law applications.
- Photographic Context: Photographs related to the cases are included, helping students visualize and contextualize the material for a richer learning experience.
- Core Historical and Theoretical Opinions: Selected opinions of foundational importance in each area of criminal law allow students to grasp the historical, theoretical, and doctrinal underpinnings of criminal law.
- Diverse and Timely Principal Cases: The book includes principal cases from multiple jurisdictions, each paired with the relevant statutes from the time of the offense, encouraging students to analyze the interplay of statutes and case law.
- Treatise-Like Summaries: Each topic area is supplemented with comprehensive summaries that provide an overview of the law, introduce foundational theoretical principles, and place the material in a broader legal and social context.
This sixth edition of Criminal Law: Case Studies & Controversies offers a hands-on approach, helping students not only understand criminal law doctrines but also develop critical thinking and practical lawyering skills essential for real-world success.

Free rental returns, whenever you are done
Print a prepaid return label from your account whenever you have finished with the book, and drop it at the carrier listed on the label. Returning early costs you nothing: it is the same free label, and sending it back sooner is welcome. Just be sure it reaches us by the semester deadline to avoid late fees.

Purchase returns: 15% restocking fee

Shipping costs calculated at checkout
Real-time rates are quoted at checkout based on your address and the books in your cart. Returning your book is always free.
Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free: print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page, whether you send it back early or on the semester deadline. Cancelling a shipped rental for a refund is different: there, the return label cost comes out of your refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
