Description
Constitutional Law Cases and Materials Concise 17th Edition Jonathan D. Varat
ISBN: 9798892098946
This Concise Edition offers a streamlined and highly accessible approach to the study of Constitutional Law, emphasizing close engagement with Supreme Court opinions, constitutional text, statutes, and other primary source materials. Designed for courses seeking a focused treatment of core constitutional doctrines, the book provides a compact and manageable alternative to more comprehensive casebooks while preserving the depth and rigor necessary for serious study.
Significantly shorter than prior editions, this volume omits First Amendment materials, recognizing that the breadth and complexity of free speech, religion, and related doctrines often warrant separate courses and are more fully addressed in the unabridged edition. This streamlined approach allows greater attention to the foundational structural and individual-rights issues that lie at the heart of constitutional law.
Like the full-length edition, the Concise Edition emphasizes direct engagement with primary materials. Rather than relying heavily on editorial summaries, it presents substantial excerpts from judicial opinions, constitutional provisions, historical sources, and statutory materials, enabling students to develop their own understanding of constitutional doctrine and encouraging instructors to organize their courses according to their own pedagogical preferences.
The book focuses on the principal themes of American constitutional structure and individual rights, including:
• The role and authority of the federal judiciary.
• Judicial review and constitutional interpretation.
• Separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
• Federalism and the allocation of authority between the federal government and the states.
• The Reconstruction Amendments and their transformative impact on constitutional law.
• Due Process and Equal Protection doctrine in all of their major dimensions.
• Congressional authority to enforce constitutional guarantees under the Reconstruction Amendments.
In addition, the edition features a substantially revised and reorganized chapter devoted to voting rights, elections, democratic governance, and related constitutional protections. This chapter examines the constitutional principles and governmental powers that shape the electoral process and promote democratic participation, providing students with an integrated treatment of one of the most dynamic areas of contemporary constitutional law.
Concise yet comprehensive, this edition combines the advantages of a focused presentation with the richness of primary source materials, making it an ideal resource for students and instructors seeking a flexible and engaging introduction to the core subjects of Constitutional Law.
