Description
ALWD Guide to Legal Citation 8th Edition
ISBN 9798894102733
Reviewed and refined by nearly fifty law librarians, legal research experts, and legal writing professors from across the country, the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation, Eighth Edition continues its tradition of providing a clear, practical, and authoritative approach to legal citation. Organized around 42 carefully crafted and extensively illustrated rules, the Guide serves as an ideal course text, classroom supplement, and professional reference for mastering American legal citation.
Building on its longstanding commitment to clarity and usability, the Eighth Edition introduces a more rhetorical and practice-oriented approach to citation. Rather than treating citation as a purely mechanical exercise, the Guide emphasizes the strategic, ethical, and persuasive choices lawyers make when citing authority. Students are encouraged to develop the evaluative judgment necessary to make informed citation decisions in a variety of settings, including law school coursework, the NextGen Bar Exam, AI-assisted legal writing, and professional legal practice.
New to the Eighth Edition
• A reorganized rule structure designed to improve learning and emphasize the persuasive role citations play in effective legal writing.
• Expanded sidebars and explanatory materials that demonstrate how citation choices influence credibility, clarity, and persuasion.
• A new rule addressing the use of artificial intelligence in legal writing, including the distinction between acknowledging AI assistance and citing AI-generated content. The rule provides practical guidance for complying with ethical obligations while protecting client confidentiality and work-product interests.
• A new introductory rule that establishes the foundations of legal citation by exploring:
- Why lawyers cite authority.
- How ethos, pathos, and logos influence citation decisions.
- Reader expectations regarding citation.
- The various contexts in which citations appear in legal and academic writing.
• New practitioner-focused guidance, including rules for preparing tables of authorities and other citation requirements commonly encountered in motions, briefs, and professional legal documents.
• Expanded coverage of modern research platforms and technology-driven sources, with guidance on citing materials accessed through a wide range of digital resources.
Features and Benefits
• Comprehensive coverage of both traditional and emerging legal sources, including e-books, blogs, listservs, discussion forums, social media platforms, and other online publications.
• Practical instruction on locating and applying local court citation rules and conventions.
• Detailed guidance on citing cases, statutes, regulations, legislative materials, and other authorities obtained through electronic databases and online sources.
• Academic Formatting icons that clearly identify differences between citation practices used in academic legal writing and those used in professional practice.
• Fast Formats that provide quick-reference models highlighting the essential elements of common citations.
• Screenshots from electronic research platforms and visual Snapshots of actual source materials to help students understand citation construction in context.
• Informative sidebars explaining the purpose behind citation rules and offering strategies for avoiding common citation errors.
• Sample citation diagrams that break citations into their component parts and illustrate proper formatting.
• Extensive cross-references that connect related rules and direct readers to additional guidance elsewhere in the text and appendices.
Expanded Appendices
The Eighth Edition includes detailed appendices containing valuable reference materials not readily available in other citation resources, including:
• Peer-reviewed local court citation conventions, court websites, and jurisdiction-specific resources.
• Expanded periodical abbreviation tables that eliminate the need for users to construct complex abbreviations independently.
• Comprehensive guidance for citing federal taxation authorities and other specialized legal materials.
By combining practical instruction, modern research guidance, ethical considerations, and a persuasive-writing perspective, the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation, Eighth Edition equips students and practitioners with the skills needed to navigate legal citation confidently and effectively in today's evolving legal environment.

Most students receive their books in 3 to 9 business days.
-
Rental returns: free at semester's end, prorated if early
Print a prepaid return label from your account whenever you have finished with the book, and drop it at the carrier listed on the label. Returning it by your semester return date, or after it is already overdue, is free with no deduction. Returning it early, before that date, deducts a 15% restocking fee and the label cost from your refund.
-
Purchase returns: 15% restocking fee
Purchases can be returned within 30 days in the condition you received. We will email a prepaid return label; once we receive your book, we refund the purchase price minus the 15% restocking fee and the return label cost. Original shipping is non-refundable.
-
Shipping costs calculated at checkout
Real-time rates are quoted at checkout based on your address and the books in your cart. Returning your book by your semester date is always free; an early return deducts the restocking fee and label cost from your refund instead.
Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free with no deduction if it reaches us by your semester return date, or after it's already overdue. Print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page. Returning it EARLY, before your semester return date, deducts a 15% restocking fee and the label cost from your refund, the same as cancelling a shipped rental for a refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
