Mastering Federal Income Tax: A Modern, Practical Approach
Federal Income Tax: A Contemporary Approach Donaldson offers a fresh, innovative approach to teaching individual income taxation, blending real-world problem-solving, statutory interpretation, and interactive learning tools to equip students with essential tax law skills. This casebook goes beyond traditional case law analysis to emphasize the critical skill of reading and applying statutes and regulations—a necessity not just for tax attorneys but also for professionals in ERISA, environmental law, criminal law, and other regulatory fields.
A Three-Tiered Learning Structure
To ensure a progressive and comprehensive understanding, the book guides students through three distinct levels of tax law engagement:
- The Big Picture – In two concise chapters, students gain an early, high-level overview of federal income taxation, including the computation of taxable income. This framework provides essential context for deeper learning.
- The Core Concepts – Two expansive chapters introduce the fundamental building blocks of taxation: gross income and deductions. These sections develop statutory reading skills and help students apply rules to real-life situations.
- Advanced Applications – Seven in-depth chapters expand on core principles, covering key areas such as exclusions, timing rules, property transactions, expense classifications, and tax shelters.
An Interactive and Problem-Based Approach
Unlike traditional textbooks, this casebook immerses students in practical exercises, helping them transition from passive readers to active problem-solvers. Features include:
- Nearly 100 detailed problems designed for class discussion, requiring students to apply Code and Regulation provisions to realistic fact patterns.
- Hundreds of self-assessment questions to reinforce learning and enhance comprehension.
- End-of-chapter review questions, allowing students to independently check their understanding.
- Integrated instructional videos, providing visual explanations of complex tax principles.
- Immediate digital access to cited cases, statutes, and articles through the Interactive Casebook Series.
