This streamlined, straightforward casebook offers a fresh perspective on employment discrimination law, presenting a procedural-based approach (lacking in other texts) with interactive materials. While still providing traditional coverage, this text emphasizes the importance of procedural issues in workplace cases. It includes a unique “best practices” chapter which discusses the most effective ways to address workplace discrimination, from both a theoretical and legal perspective.
Numerous exercises and problems foster classroom discussion. Practice tips situate students in the role of a practicing lawyer. Modern, cutting-edge cases demonstrate the importance of employment discrimination law. Chapter-in-review sections, summary charts, and graphs are used throughout to further student comprehension. Text boxes within cases, historical notes, and news events effectively help bring the material to life.
New to the 3rd Edition:
- Comprehensive treatment of the Supreme Court’s controversial and groundbreaking decision in Bostock v. Clayton County recognizing sexual orientation and transgender status as protected under Title VII’s employment discrimination provisions
- An examination of the rise of virtual work in the modern economy and the potential employment discrimination implications
- A look at how the pandemic has reconfigured the meaning of work in our society and the ways in which employment discrimination law may be impacted
- An examination of the contours of the ministerial exception in light of recent Supreme Court case law
- A more streamlined and accessible text
Benefits for instructors and students:
- Focus on procedure (with theoretical underpinnings) to stimulate practical learning
- Comprehensive coverage, encompassing topics traditionally included in the course (statutory, regulatory, and administrative issues), but with a timely procedural focus integrated throughout
- Recent, topical cases which bring the issues to life for students and allow them to see how procedural issues are demonstrated in the employment discrimination context
- A unique chapter on best practices, which examines the proper training and complaint procedures that employers should have in place; explores policies and procedures for responding to employee reference requests; looks at emerging trends in the workplace, such as social media policies; and covers employee bullying
- Streamlined and straightforward presentation
- Interactive features (discussion problems, practice/procedural tips, class exercises, notes and questions, graphs/charts, etc.), to foster class discussion and student engagement
- Chapter-in-review

Shipping & Returns
-
Fast, standard shipping
Most students receive their books in 3 to 9 business days.
-
Free rental returns, whenever you are done
Print a prepaid return label from your account whenever you have finished with the book, and drop it at the carrier listed on the label. Returning early costs you nothing: it is the same free label, and sending it back sooner is welcome. Just be sure it reaches us by the semester deadline to avoid late fees.
-
Purchase returns: 15% restocking fee
Purchases can be returned within 30 days in the condition you received. We will email a prepaid return label; once we receive your book, we refund the purchase price minus the 15% restocking fee and the return label cost. Original shipping is non-refundable.
-
Shipping costs calculated at checkout
Real-time rates are quoted at checkout based on your address and the books in your cart. Returning your book is always free.
Rental Terms
Return by December 28, 2026 for Fall 2026 rentals.
- Late Fees
- Books returned after the semester deadline accrue a weekly late fee of about 10% of the book's Brand New price, for each copy that is overdue. The rent you have already paid counts toward the book's replacement value (its Brand New price), so late fees stop once your rent plus late fees reach it. That replacement value is the most a rental can ever cost you. We email a reminder 48 hours before any charge, and any late fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout.
- Damage Fees
- Books returned damaged beyond normal classroom wear may be assessed a damage fee, capped at the book's replacement value (its Brand New price). Any damage fees are charged to the payment method you save at checkout after we inspect the returned book.
- Return Shipping
- Returning your book is free: print a prepaid label (USPS or UPS, whichever is cheaper for your package) from your account's My Rentals page, whether you send it back early or on the semester deadline. Cancelling a shipped rental for a refund is different: there, the return label cost comes out of your refund.
- 30-Day Cancellation
- Changed your mind? Cancel an active rental within 30 days of your order from My Account → My Rentals. Cancel before your book ships and it’s free; once it has shipped, we refund the rental price minus a 15% restocking fee and the return label cost, released once we receive your book. Shipping is non-refundable.
